Daedalus and his son Icarus were imprisoned in the minotaur's maze by King Minos. They managed to escape from the maze, but in order to escape Minos's wrath they had to leave Crete. Daedalus built wings for himself and Icarus, fashioned with feathers held together with wax. Their escape would have worked but for the fact that Icarus flew too close to the sun and fell to his death.
