Jamestown Landing
By kenwasThe first successful settlement in Virginia (1607) although after the first two years of starvation and drought only 61 of the original 500 settlers were still alive. There were some 14000 native Americans in the area (Powhatans) who at first welcomed the settlers but soon came in conflict with them and attacked the settlement. The war continued until the colonists captured the daughter (Matoaka) of the chief. The chief agreed to a peace settlement in exchange for the release of his daughter. She had been nicknamed Pocahontas by the settlers.
