The Black Ship
By kenwasBased on the true story of mutiny and murder aboard HMS Hermione in the Caribbean of 1797. The vicious Captain Pigot had ordered the reefing of the topsails in the dangerous conditions of a night storm at sea. Three sailors fell to the deck and the Captain ordered the still alive bodies thrown over the side to the sharks. This was the final straw after a long voyage of abuse and the crew mutinied and killed the Captain and most of his officers. The ship became known as the Black Ship and was hunted relentlessly by the British. After a short lived attempt at piracy depicted here, the crew gave the ship over to the Spanish. Later, the British ship HMS Surprize, (the same ship as made famous in the Patrick O'Brian Master and Commander series), under Captain Hamilton, conducted a daring night raid into the Spanish harbor and retook the ship, killing 104 of the mutineers and capturing 97.
