I wouldn´t like to say for sure Brett. I grew up in Portsmouth and most of the groins ( if that is the correct spelling ) along the east side of Southsea were Edwardian, but I believe that some of those nearer to Eastney were put in place in the reign of Victoria... mind you most of those were ´very worn groins´

mickeblue I have never really stopped and thought about them. They just seem a natural part of our seascape.
I remember seeing some being replaced many years back. They used a large pile driver to knock them in.

Next time I go I´ll have a proper look and perhaps get some detailed pics.
