Virginia
By kenwasThe Confederate States salvaged the frigate Merrimack and de-masted and steel plated her. She was renamed the CSS Virginia. Here she heads out for sea trials of Hampton Roads, VA.
The Virginia fought the Monitor to a draw in 1862 and later that year both vessels were sunk: the Monitor floundered at sea and was lost and the Virginia was scuttled to avoid capture by the Northern forces.
